Academic research that is funded by public money should be available to the public without a paywall or requiring institutional login credentials. We, as residents, have largely paid for this research to be possible through our tax dollars.
Additionally, academic institutions and individuals conduct research largely paid for by the private sector. We, as consumers, have also paid for this research with our money, time, behaviors, biometrics, attention, engagement, and any other data extracted from us with or without our full or even partial informed consent. By extension, any research conducted with funding from private entities that extract consumer data should also be publicly available to us as the product resource.
Government regulatory agencies are inconsistent in their requirements for reporting data conducted within an entity. In many cases, private companies conduct their own internal research and auditing practices meaning that compliance by private companies is self-reported.
